Cycling and walking in Brussels

Increasingly frustrated about having to perform death defying emergency manouvres during my daily commute, and also frustrated about my increasing frustration (if that makes sense), I have created this map.

Its purpose is manifold – to record unreported and undisciplined driving offences and parking violations in brussels, but also to highlight the positive aspects, and also where work needs to be done (i.e. infrastructure). The aim: to build up a picture of the cycling and walking experience in Brussels, highlight dangerous or unmaintained hotspots, and highlight the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws in Brussels, and greater awareness and respect for cyclists and pedestrians.

It also acts a bit like therapy…

Plans re-considered!

With the spread of breweries, I could never feasibly do more than 60km a day, if I wanted to set up camp in daylight, and this didn’t take into consideration the heavy Czech food, the continual accumulation of alcohol in my blood, hangovers, adverse weather, mechanical problems, nor most importantly, the generosity (usually in the form of alcoholic donations) of the locals…

The hidden dangers of international train travel…

After finishing the month of July on a high, both literally and metaphorically speaking, I was to begin my month-long holiday cycling around Czech breweries.

Critical Mass and a tall tall bike…

My project for July was simple: after being secretly inspired by the tall-bike jousters in Amsterdam, I had made it my mission to find myself a tall-bike, and ride it in the July Critical Mass.

Every year a “World Naked Bike Ride” or Cyclonudista is held in different cities all over the world to show the fragility of cyclists in traffic and ask more (political) attention for cycling as a sustainable way of transport in cities.

In Brussels it was a sunny day, which resulted in many naked cyclists, taking most people in town by surprise, creating mixed reactions and lots of photo and video attention. See our video:

Bikes not Cars Festival: In Crust We Trust

After deliberating about how best to kick start the blog, and after missing numerous suitable occasions, I decided to finally dive into the blogosphere with a report on the Bikes not Cars festival, held in Amsterdam July 3rd – 5th. What could be more appropriate? At least that’s what I thought. I was in for a surprise, a surprise that would, over the weekend, prove a very positive one. (more…)

Carfree in Brussels

If you didn’t know it yet, let us tell you this: you don’t need that smelly old car in town. It’s making the city unhealthy, stressful and dangerous. What about trying a bike or public transport? Or just walking? It’s faster, cheaper, healthier and more environmentally friendly.

Carfree Brussels is all about the carfree lifestyle in the city of Brussels. Alternative modes of transport get you around just as easily, and it makes the city a more livable place for all of us.
